Things You Should Know About Bait And Tackle

By Shirley Phillips

Bait is any substance like food used to attract and catch animals like fish. Examples of them are worms, insects and smaller fishes but there are also artificial ones that are now commonly used by fishermen. It is becoming common because they can be used again and designed to resemble the appearance and movement of prey.

Baits and other fishing equipment and gear are called tackle along with hooks, lines, sinkers, rods, reels, nets and others. These things can be bought in bait and tackle Dryden Ontario Canada stores and other places. Here are some basic information about the other tackles you need to know if you want to get into recreational fishing.

Hooks are used to catch fish by impaling the mouth or snagging the body sometimes and these have been used for a long time by fishermen. They could hold also different types of artificial and natural lures and baits. Hooks have different designs, shapes, sizes and materials used to make them depending on the intended purpose.

Lines are cords that hooks are attached in one end while rods and reels in the other. Using these in catching fish is called angling where they were made historically from plant stalk, silk thread, horse hair or linen. Modern one are manufactured from artificial materials which include dacron, polyethylene, nylon and dyneema.

Plummets or sinkers are weights used for sinking lures and baits faster during angling or to cast them at greater range. They are made of lead traditionally but was banned by a few countries because of its tendency to cause lead poisoning when ingested. The weights vary depending on the kind of fishes you are wishing to capture.

Rods are used with the hook, line and sinker and were made from ash wood, reed or bamboo while their handles were wrapped cane, wood or cork. Modern ones are fitted with line guides and a reel for stowing lines. The difference between them and poles are that poles have the line attached to their tip without a reel.

Reels are devices for deploying and retrieving of lines using a spool mounted on an axle and are used in angling. They are usually used with rods but some specialized ones are mounted on crossbows or to boat gunwales or transoms. They usually have fittings aiding in casting for distance and accuracy perfect for competitive casting.

Nets are meshes formed by knotting a thin thread though ancient ones are made from leaves, plant stalk and cocoon silk. Hard nets are held open by a loop usually on the end of a long handle used for sweeping up fishes near the water surface. Cast nets are small round ones with weights on their edges thrown by the fisher and hauled back in after.

These items could be stored inside tackle boxes when not being used by the fisher and some have small trays meant for smaller tackles. These trays have lids to prevent small tackles from getting mixed with other and could be detached sometimes. They would then become separate and can be bought when a small tackle is what you need.
