The Process Involved In Reverse Vasectomy

By Jason Murphy

It is possible that vasectomy is reversed but the surgical procedure involved is complex. For the process, a doctor will block or cut tubes which are called the vas deferens. These are the tubes which carry sperms to the penis from the testis. For that process, a doctor rejoins the tubes to enable sperms to reach the semen that is ejaculated. There are two techniques that can be used for those that want to reverse vasectomy.

The first of the procedures is known as vasovasostomy whereby a doctor will sew the vas deferens, which is done from the testis to the penis. The other procedure is called vasoepididymostomy. For the procedure, there will be attachment of vas deferens to some tiny organ at the back of testicles that holds sperms. The treatment option is more expensive than vasovasostomy. Doctors tend to prefer it in instances when one cannot have vasovasostomy.

The procedures will be performed at clinics or hospitals. They are done under anesthesia so that one does not feel pain. It is a process that takes between 2 to 4 hours. This means one goes back home the same day. Full recovery can take a fortnight. One can go for a number of vasectomies. The success rate will however reduce with each reversal.

There are various reasons for one to have vasectomy reversed. There are people that have changed their minds and want to start families or have more children. There are also men that might have lost a kid and might consider the option as well. There are some men that consider the procedure at the advice of a doctor. This is done so that the pain in the testicles is minimized. Such pain is usually because of a previous vasectomy.

There are possible side effects of the treatment. There could be some bleeding from the scrotum which leads to swelling. To avoid such situations, orders of a doctor need to be followed before and also after surgery. It will also be possible that one gets infections but these can be treated easily with antibiotics. For certain patients, there is persistent pain. This should be reported to a doctor as soon as possible.

You will get to know whether the process is a success when there are sperms after some months. The doctor will collect samples for examination for 4 to 6 months. The time is enough to have a stabilized count. In the case of vasovasostomy, it could take more than a year for sperms to return. The time will be longer for those that have undergone vasoepididymostomy.

After sperms have come back, chances of conception might increase. The level of success of the process is dependent on various things. These include type of surgical procedure one had in the past and whether some factors are keeping the other partner from conceiving.

The reversal never really affects sex life of an individual. However, those affected are not supposed to have sex or ejaculate until they get the go ahead from a doctor. In most instances, this will take between 2 to 3 weeks, after which normal sex resumes.
