The Binge Eating Recovery Period

By Douglas Wallace

In the past, addictive behaviours came in the form of drugs and drinking on most occasions. However, these days, there are so many ways of becoming addicted to something. It can even include the internet. Food is often the thing that more people have problems with. It is freely available and it helps people feel better about themselves. It is not only anorexia which one becomes aware of these days, but binging and bulimia have also become common. Binge eating recovery is something to focus on when this becomes a problem.

It can especially be difficult when this leads to bulimia. People usually binge on processed food which is particularly unhealthy. They will then purge. It is unhealthy, leading to problems with the stomach and digestive system. It usually happens because of a psychological issue. For example, the individual will not be satisfied with their body. They usually have a low self esteem. This is a way in which they start to feel better about themselves.

In addition to this, you will also find that you put on weight. The addiction becomes worse over time. The food you enjoy is usually comfort food. It includes carbohydrates and desserts. This makes your weight shoot up. The fact that you are adding so many calories to your diet means that you become more depressed as well.

They may also find that the weight is not easy to lose. They have a poor body image and low self esteem which can be cured by losing weight. Sometimes, the patient will need to look into other methods of therapy which can help deal with this low self esteem. Something like cognitive behaviour therapy can be helpful.

Just like with any other type of addiction, one needs to learn more about the root of the problem. There may be reasons for the disorder and this is what one needs to deal with first and foremost. Besides a poor body image, people also get into a habit like this because of childhood problems. They can start purging because they feel ashamed of their past.

The first stage to recovery is to realize that this is actually life threatening. You could even develop blood cancer. Serious problems will develop with your stomach if you continue to put yourself through such tortue. Emotionally, it is a real problem as well because one may find it is necessary to find a bathroom after eating a gourmet meal at a restaurant.

This leads to poor health as well. The nutritionist will check up with the client from time to time. Goals are often set and they will work towards these. Besides one on one therapy, patients can also benefit from group therapy. The support you get here is genuine. Members connect with one another and this leads to valuable relationships which can continue for many years.

Unlike many other disorders, such as manic depression and bipolar, this is something which can be cured. Of course, one needs to make the effort. There is no magic button that you can press. But over time, you find that things improve the more you talk about your struggles and when you share intimate details about your life.
