As a sport, lacrosse has an origin that stretches several centuries ago. It has undergone a lot of evolution to become the professional game people know today. Its origin can be traced back to 1100 AD. The sport was established in many countries like Canada by the 17th century. Currently, no one would want to play the Canadian version of the game that people played back in the 17th century. Back in the day, it was a very awkward game. When in need of Girls Lacrosse New Jersey should be visited.

First, the sport involved very many players, ranging from 100 all the way to 1000. The field on which it was played was very huge and stretched some two miles in length. Players played the game for two to three days from sunrise to sunset. However, a major change would later happen in 1856 when the Montreal Lacrosse Club was established.

Very many adjustments were made to this sport after the establishment of Montreal Lacrosse Club. First and foremost, the rules were codified and the players of the game were required to follow the rules. Most of these changes consisted of shortening the duration of the game to less than one hour contrary to the previous version where the game continued for days. Secondly, the total number of players was greatly reduced to only twelve.

The Olympic games of the summer of 1904 included lacrosse. Some of the teams that participated in the games were from the Great Britain, Canada and the US. In 1881, the college tournament happened in the United States. It was the very first one. Harvard beat Princeton during the game in a final of 3-0.

For a very long time, this sport was played by Native American. Later, it spread and people from other social groupings started to take part. However, even though the game and its popularity spread, it was largely played by men. Women remained largely secluded from participation for several centuries. However, in 1890, the first ever women lacrosse game was played. The game took place in Scotland.

Due to that, there was the invention of the female version of the game in Scotland and many of the rules used today were developed there too. Up to today, the rules that govern men and female versions of the game are different. For example, for the men version, each of the teams should have one goal keeper and a total of nine players. On the contrary, in the female version, there is supposed to be eleven players and one goal keeper for each team.

The female version has four attackers, mid-fielders, and defensemen. The men version instead has 3 attackers, defensemen and mid-fielders. The only players allowed to move over the whole field when playing are the midfielders. There is restricted movement for the attackers and defensemen. For example, both attackers and defensemen are not allowed to cross their respective midfield lines.

If attackers or defense men cross the midfield line in certain conditions, a foul is called. The fields for both male and female versions of the game are of the same size. A standard field is required to be 60 yards wide and 110 yards long.
